Current projection of energy consumption trends has shown that combustion of fossil fuel will continue to play an important role in industrial thermal processes, power generation, and transportation for a substantial period. In order for these sectors to sustain under the finite fossil fuel reserves, improvements in existing devices and development of novel concepts that emphasize on energy efficiency are necessary. Numerical simulations can be used to address this need, in particular by complementing experiments with extensive and quick parametric studies.
In this presentation, cutting-edge simulation works are reviewed, highlighting the current state of computational fluid dynamics and numerical combustion investigations. Much of the focus will be placed in the context of the large-eddy simulation (LES) methodology, which follows the shift in the paradigm, especially within academia, for high-fidelity simulations. LES is an established numerical technique that has shown great potential in the representation of turbulent reacting flows, capturing the multi-physics phenomena by resolving the large-scale flow features and modeling the fine-scale turbulent effects.
Typically pertinent to scales comparable or smaller than turbulence, the inclusion of chemical reactions in simulations requires an additional combustion model, which is the emphasis of the dissertation and postdoctoral works. Contributions to the analysis and improvement of combustion models will be presented in terms of both a-priori and a-posteriori studies, followed by future research interests on the implementation of turbulent combustion simulations to relevant problems.
CHAN Wai Lee is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He received his degrees of B.S.E., summa cum laude and M.S.E. in 2011 and 2012, respectively, from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan (UofM), Ann Arbor. In 2016, he obtained his Ph.D. from the UofM, working on the development of turbulence-chemistry interaction closures, fundamental analyses of combustion models, and high-fidelity numerical simulations of turbulent reacting flows and high-speed propulsive engines. Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Stanford University, before returning to Singapore to join NTU in 2017.
